Rocksmith Alternatives for Learning Real Songs

Published 5 October 2026. Details of other products were checked on their own sites on 5 October 2026.

Rocksmith+ teaches guitar with a scrolling note display, the real song and feedback on what you play. Some players want the same idea with their own tabs, without a subscription, or on a Mac or Linux computer. Here is what each option does, so you can pick the one that fits how you practise.

What Rocksmith+ Is

Rocksmith+ is a subscription service from Ubisoft for guitar, bass and piano. You learn from its song library of official recordings and covers, and it tracks how you play as you go (Ubisoft). A free preview gives a limited set of songs, lessons and features. Ubisoft offers it for PC through Ubisoft Connect, Android, iOS, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 (Ubisoft).

The songs come from that library. If a song you want isn't in it, you can't add it yourself.

What to Look For in an Alternative

The Alternatives

LumaFrets

LumaFrets is a desktop app for Mac, Windows and Linux. It shows a tab as a 3D note highway in time with the real song, from a YouTube video or your own audio file. You bring the tab. It opens Guitar Pro (3 to 7), MusicXML and TuxGuitar files. It doesn't sell or download tabs.

You can slow the song from 25% to 100% with the pitch kept, loop a section, and use the speed trainer, which plays the loop a little faster each time round. The built-in amp has five amps, six cabinets and eight pedals. There's a tuner that follows the tab's tuning, a count-in and click, and scoring that listens to you play and marks each note hit or missed.

LumaFrets is free. Pro is a one-time $29, with no subscription. Pro splits your audio file into vocals, guitar, bass, drums, piano and the rest, so you can solo the guitar, or mute it and play the part yourself. It also plays your own VST3 and Audio Unit plugins, amp captures and impulse responses. Songs are separated on your computer, and nothing is uploaded.

It isn't a lesson course. There are exercises, but no guided path from your first chord.

Songsterr

Songsterr is a tab site with a player in the browser. Its paid Plus plan adds speed control without changing pitch, solo and mute, tab downloads as Guitar Pro, MIDI and audio files, and AI transcription of up to 50 full tabs a month. Plus is pay as you go, and you can cancel any time (Songsterr).

Guitar Pro

Guitar Pro is a tab editor and player for Windows and Mac. You can read, write and share tabs for guitar, bass, drums, piano and more, with a chord dictionary, a scale library and transposition (Guitar Pro). It's where you write or fix a tab. The files it saves open in LumaFrets, so the two work together.
